Frequently asked questions

Not working

I press Shift and the arrow keys, but nothing happens.

Go through these steps:

  1. Reload the Instagram tab. Tabs that were already open when you installed or updated the extension need a reload before the keys work.
  2. Make sure you are on instagram.com in Chrome on your computer. The extension runs on no other site, and not in the Instagram app.
  3. Check that the extension is on. Click its toolbar icon: the popup shows Enabled or Disabled. When it is off, the icon shows a red OFF badge.
  4. Check your keys. The popup shows the keys that are set. If you chose Custom Keys in the settings, Shift and the arrows no longer apply.
  5. Click an empty part of the page first. The keys are ignored while the cursor is in a comment, message or search field.
  6. The post must be a carousel (several photos or videos) and mostly visible on screen.
The keys move the wrong post, or only work after I scroll.

The keys act on the carousel post that is visible on screen. Open Settings from the popup and change Viewport Detection Sensitivity, which sets how much of a post must be visible before the keys act on it.

It stopped working, or does not work with Instagram in another language.

Carousel Control presses Instagram’s own next and previous buttons and finds them partly by their English labels. When Instagram changes its page, or is set to another language, the keys may stop working. Please email us the language you use and the page address so we can look into it.

The Alt, Control or Cmd preset does something else.

Those keys together with the arrow keys can also be shortcuts of Chrome or your operating system, for example to go back a page or switch desktops. Pick Shift + Arrow Keys or set your own keys under Custom Keys in the settings.

Space no longer scrolls the page when a video is showing.

When a video is on screen, Space plays or pauses it and M mutes or unmutes it. These two keys cannot be changed. To get the normal behaviour back for a while, switch the extension off in the popup.

How do I set my own keys?

Click the toolbar icon and then Settings. Under Keyboard Shortcuts, choose Custom Keys. Click the field next to Previous Image: or Next Image: and press the key or key combination you want. The × button clears a key. Changes are saved right away. M and Space are already used for videos, so pick other keys.

How do I switch it off for a moment?

Use the switch in the toolbar popup, or right-click the toolbar icon and choose Toggle Carousel Control. While it is off, the icon shows an OFF badge and Instagram works as without the extension.

Privacy

What does Carousel Control know about what I view?

Nothing. It runs only on instagram.com, makes no network requests and has no analytics or install ping. Your settings and a simple count of how often you used the keys stay in Chrome’s own storage, and Chrome syncs them between your devices if Chrome sync is on. The privacy policy has the details.

Uninstall

How do I remove Carousel Control?

Right-click the Carousel Control icon in Chrome’s toolbar (or in the puzzle piece menu) and choose Remove from Chrome. You can also remove it at chrome://extensions. Removing it deletes your settings and the usage count.
