What is RedirMe URL Shortener?

RedirMe is the URL shortener from Smoking Media. This extension puts it on your toolbar: click the button and the page you are on gets a short link, ready to copy.

How it works

  1. Open the page you want to share.
  2. Click the RedirMe button in the toolbar.
  3. Click Copy and paste the short link anywhere.

The popup also shows the original address, so you can check what you shortened, and links to the link’s info page on redirme.com for its stats. Need a QR code? Create one on redirme.com.

Only web pages (http and https) can be shortened. Browser pages such as chrome://, extension pages and local files are refused before anything is sent.

No account needed

You do not need to sign up. The extension keeps a random guest ID in your browser, so all the links you create are grouped together. The same ID is used on redirme.com, so links you shorten on the website and in the extension end up in the same place.

Features

What it doesn't do

Permissions

Every permission this extension asks for, and why it needs it.

activeTab
When you click the toolbar button, the popup reads the address and title of the active tab to shorten that page. No other tab is read, and nothing happens until you click.
storage
Keeps one value: your random guest ID (a ULID) that groups your short links.
https://api.redirme.com/*
The popup sends the address and title of the tab, with your guest ID, to the RedirMe API to create the short link.
https://redirme.com/*
On redirme.com pages only, a small script copies the guest ID between the website and the extension, so links made in both places end up together. It reads no page content and runs on no other site.

Privacy first

RedirMe only sends something when you click its button: the address and title of that tab, with a random guest ID, go to redirme.com to create the short link. It has no analytics, shows no ads and never reads the content of pages.
