Help with the RedirMe URL Shortener browser extension: answers to common questions and how to reach us.
RedirMe shortens web pages only. Browser pages such as
chrome:// addresses, extension pages, about: pages, local
files (file://) and view-source: pages cannot be shortened,
and nothing is sent to RedirMe for them. Open the web page you
want to share and click the RedirMe button there.
If the problem stays, please email us the message and the address you tried to shorten.
Click the puzzle piece icon in Chrome’s toolbar and pin
RedirMe URL Shortener. Also check that it is switched on at
chrome://extensions.
Open the page and click the RedirMe button. The popup creates the
short link right away. Click Copy to copy the full link,
including https://. Below it you see the original address, so
you can check what you shortened.
There is no keyboard shortcut by default. You can set one for
“Activate the extension” at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
Click link info page in the popup. It opens the stats for that short link on redirme.com. For a QR code, visit redirme.com.
Your links are grouped by a random guest ID. When you visit redirme.com in the same Chrome profile, the extension and the website share that ID. If the website already has an ID, the extension takes over the website’s one, so links made before that may stay under the old ID. Links made in another browser or Chrome profile use a different ID.
Only when you click the RedirMe button (or Try Again), the
popup sends the address and title of that tab, with your guest
ID, to api.redirme.com. Nothing is sent before you click, and
no other tab is read. The extension never reads page content and
has no analytics or ads.
Anyone with the short link can open the original address, so do not shorten private links, such as pages with a login token in the address. The privacy policy has the details.
Right-click the RedirMe icon in Chrome’s toolbar (or in the
puzzle piece menu) and choose Remove from Chrome. You can
also remove it at chrome://extensions. This deletes the
extension’s copy of your guest ID.
The short links you created stay on redirme.com and keep working. If you visited redirme.com, the website also keeps its own copy of the guest ID in that browser.
Email us and tell us what happened, on which page, and your Chrome and extension version. A real person reads every message.
