Speed Reader Privacy Policy

Last updated:

Speed Reader (“the extension”) is a free browser extension that shows the text of a web page one word at a time.

What we collect

Nothing. The extension does not collect or transmit any personal data or information about the pages you read to the developer or to third parties.

  • We do not use analytics or tracking of any kind, and there is no install ping.
  • We do not use cookies.
  • We do not have user accounts.
  • We do not operate any server that your data passes through.

How it works

When you open the reader, the extension reads the text of the current page in your browser and shows it in an overlay on that page. The text is never sent anywhere. The article extraction (Mozilla Readability) ships inside the extension.

Network requests

The extension makes no network requests at all: no server, no remote code and no remote fonts.

Where your data lives

  • Settings: speed, font size, theme and similar options are saved with chrome.storage.sync. If Chrome sync is on, Chrome syncs them between your own devices.
  • Reading positions (only if you turn on “Remember reading position per page”): the address of each page you read, the word where you stopped and when, for at most 100 pages, in chrome.storage.local on this device only.

Removing the extension deletes all of it. We never receive any of this data.

Permissions

  • Storage: to save the settings above.
  • Access to the pages you visit: so the reader can work on any article. The page text is only read when you open the reader.

Data sharing

We do not sell, share, or transfer any user data to third parties.

Children’s privacy

The extension does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy we will change the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Material changes will also be noted in the extension’s release notes on the Chrome Web Store.
