Speed Reader looks for the main text by itself, which does not work on every site. Select the part you want to read with your mouse first, then click the icon: it reads only your selection.
The in-page shortcut is set in the settings under Keyboard
Shortcut, Activate reader (Alt+S by default). It does not
fire while you type in a text field. On a Mac, Option
combinations often type a special character instead, so the

the extension can run. You can change it at
chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
Click the progress bar to jump to any point. Clicking the toolbar icon again also closes the reader.

No. The text is read in your browser and only shown in the reader. Speed Reader makes no network requests and has no analytics. The settings sync with your Chrome profile. Saved reading positions (page address, position and time) stay on this device. There is no button to clear them, and turning the option off does not delete the ones already saved: removing the extension does. The privacy policy has the details.
Right-click the Speed Reader icon in Chrome’s toolbar (or in the
puzzle piece menu) and choose Remove from Chrome. You can
also remove it at chrome://extensions. This deletes your
settings and any saved reading positions.
