Frequently asked questions

Not working

My new tab doesn't show Tabloid.
  1. Check that Tabloid is switched on at chrome://extensions.
  2. If Chrome asks whether you want to keep the new tab page an extension changed, choose to keep it.
  3. Only one extension can replace the new tab page. If you have another new tab extension, switch it off.

Tabloid replaces the new tab page only. Chrome does not let extensions replace the new tab page in Incognito windows, and your home page and startup pages stay as they are.

A feed box shows a warning triangle.

Tabloid has no permission to read that feed. Click the triangle to open the settings, then click Allow access next to the feed and confirm in Chrome’s prompt.

I can't add a feed.

Paste the address of the RSS or Atom feed itself, starting with http or https. When you click Add feed, Chrome asks for access to that feed’s website. You need to allow it: Tabloid can only read a feed after you do. Feeds behind a login, or on sites that block feed readers, cannot be shown.

New articles don't appear right away.

Feeds are kept for up to 15 minutes, so a new tab opens instantly. When you open a new tab after that, Tabloid downloads the feeds again. If a feed cannot be loaded, its box keeps showing the articles it had.

My background photos don't match my keywords.

Photos based on your Photo keywords need your own free Pexels API key in the settings. Without a key, Tabloid uses a small set of bundled photos. If you see Your Pexels API key seems invalid, check the key in the settings.

Using Tabloid

How do I arrange the boxes?

Drag a box by its header to move it, and drag its bottom right corner to resize it. Tabloid remembers the layout on every new tab. To start over, click Reset layout in the settings.

How do I show shortcuts to my favorite sites?

Open the settings with the gear button at the bottom right of the new tab and turn on Show shortcuts to your most visited sites. Chrome asks for permission when you switch it on. The row is off by default.

Do my feeds follow me to my other computers?

Your feeds and settings are saved with Chrome sync, so they follow you if Chrome sync is on. The box layout is saved on each computer separately.

Privacy

Does Tabloid track what I read?

No. Tabloid collects nothing and has no analytics. Feeds and photos are downloaded straight from their sources by your browser. The privacy policy has the details.

Uninstall

How do I remove Tabloid?

Open the puzzle piece menu in Chrome’s toolbar, click the three dots next to Tabloid and choose Remove from Chrome. You can also remove it at chrome://extensions. Your original new tab page comes back, and the settings and cached feeds Tabloid saved in your browser are removed with it.
