Help with the Username Generator browser extension: answers to common questions and how to reach us.
chrome://extensions.If the icon is still missing, the field may not be recognised. See the next question.
Plain text fields whose name, id, label, placeholder or autocomplete setting points to a username or a name: username, login, handle, nickname, screen name, display name and first, last or full name. It looks for these English words, so a field that is only labelled in another language may not get the icon.
Email, password and hidden fields never get the icon. A website
can also hide it on purpose with
data-username-generator="false".
Yes. Chrome does not let extensions run on its own pages (such as
chrome:// addresses and the new tab page), on the Chrome Web
Store or on other extensions’ pages. Files you open from your
computer only work when you switch on Allow access to file
URLs for the extension at chrome://extensions.
Some forms load in an embedded frame. Right-click the username field and choose Username Generator > Generate Username. The extension then adds itself to that frame and opens the suggestions.
Right-click a field on that site, open Username Generator and choose Disable on this field, Disable on this page or Disable on this domain. To turn it back on, right-click a field there again and choose the matching Enable on this item. There is no list of switched off sites in the settings. Icons in other fields of the same page go away after a reload.
Open the settings: click the puzzle piece icon in Chrome’s toolbar, click the three dots next to Username Generator and choose Options. Pick a Username Style, set the Username Length (Minimum and Maximum, from 3 to 30), switch Include Numbers and Include Symbols on or off and click Save Settings. The next list of suggestions uses them.
No. Names are made up in your browser, without asking any website, so a suggestion may already be taken. Click the icon again for five new ones.
No. It only looks at field names and labels to find username fields, never at what you type. It makes no network requests and has no analytics or install ping. Your settings and the places where you switched the icon off stay in Chrome’s own storage. The privacy policy has the details.
Click the puzzle piece icon in Chrome’s toolbar, click the three
dots next to Username Generator and choose
Remove from Chrome. You can also remove it at
chrome://extensions. Removing it deletes your settings and the
list of fields, pages and sites where you switched it off.
