Help with the XGrab browser extension: answers to common questions and how to reach us.
The button sits in the action bar of posts with photos, videos or GIFs. Posts without media do not get one. If it is missing:
chrome://extensions.x.com or twitter.com in Chrome on
your computer. The X apps and other websites are not
supported. If it is still missing, X may have changed its site. Please email us the address of the post so we can look into it.
The icon only appears on a profile’s Media tab, where the
address ends in /media. It sits inside the tab, right after
the word “Media”. Open that tab, and reload the page if the icon
does not show up. If you still do not see it, X may have changed
its page layout: please email us the profile address.
To list a whole profile, XGrab reuses the media list request that X itself sends when the Media tab loads. Without it, there is nothing to page through.
If the panel says “Please refresh the page and try again.”, XGrab was updated or restarted while the tab was open. A reload fixes it.
X only returns part of a very large media library, so the number of files can be lower than the count on the profile. XGrab also stops listing when X stops answering, for example when X limits how many requests you can make in a short time. It then saves everything it found up to that point. Wait a while and run Download All again: files you already have are skipped.
Yes. XGrab already tries each file up to 3 times. When the batch is done, the panel lists the files that still failed and shows a Retry Failed button that tries only those again.
This happens when you use the downloads folder and Chrome’s
setting “Ask where to save each file before downloading” is on.
Turn it off in Chrome’s settings, under Downloads
(chrome://settings/downloads).
When you click Download All, XGrab asks for a folder. Pick
one and every account gets its own folder in it, named
@username. Files are named @username_postId_1.jpg (videos and
GIFs end in .mp4).
If you close the folder picker instead, files go to
Downloads/XGrab/@username/. The picker opens again on the next
Download All until you pick a folder. The download button on a
single post uses the folder you picked, or the downloads folder
if you have not picked one.
To switch folders, open the panel and click Change download folder. Chrome may also ask again for permission to save in your folder, for example after a restart.
No. With a folder you picked, XGrab skips files that are already in it. With the downloads folder, it checks Chrome’s download history and skips files that were saved before and are still there. Files you got another way are not detected in that case. While a batch runs you can Pause, Resume or Cancel it from the panel.
To list a profile’s media, XGrab keeps a local copy of the headers of X’s own media list request, including the tokens of your signed in session. They stay in your browser and are only ever sent back to X. XGrab has no server, no analytics and no install ping, so we never see your account or what you download. The privacy policy has the details.
Right-click the XGrab icon in Chrome’s toolbar (or in the puzzle
piece menu) and choose Remove from Chrome. You can also
remove it at chrome://extensions. This deletes the stored
session headers, the download queue and the folder you picked.
The files you downloaded stay on your computer.
