Transcript Download for YouTube support

Help with the Transcript Download for YouTube browser extension: answers to common questions and how to reach us.

Frequently asked questions

Not working

I don't see the download button. What can I do?

The button sits in the row of buttons below the video, right before the three-dot More actions button. If it is missing:

  1. Reload the page. Tabs that were already open when you installed the extension only pick it up after a reload.
  2. Check that the extension is switched on at chrome://extensions.
  3. Make sure you are on a regular video page: the address starts with https://www.youtube.com/watch. The button does not appear on Shorts, on m.youtube.com, on YouTube Music or on videos embedded in other websites.
The button is greyed out.

That means YouTube has no transcript for this video. Hover the button and it says No transcript available for this video. The extension saves the transcript YouTube already has. It does not transcribe audio, so videos without a transcript cannot be downloaded.

It says it could not load the transcript.

Wait until the video page has finished loading, then pick a format again. If the message keeps coming back, reload the page. Still no luck? YouTube may have changed its page. Please email us the address of the video so we can look into it.

The transcript is in the wrong language.

The menu shows which language you will get, for example Language: English. To switch, click Open transcript panel in the menu, pick another language at the bottom of YouTube’s transcript panel, and download again. The next file uses the language you picked.

Using Transcript Download for YouTube

Which format should I pick?
  • SRT: subtitles for video players and editors. The file is named Title [video id].en.srt (with the language code of the transcript), so players such as VLC pick it up next to a downloaded video.
  • WebVTT: subtitles for web players.
  • Plain text: readable paragraphs, one per chapter.
  • Text with timestamps: one line per caption, like YouTube’s transcript panel.
Can I change the language of the menu?

Yes. Open the menu and choose a language under Menu language. Automatic follows YouTube’s own language, then your browser’s. The menu is available in 9 languages.

Is there a limit on how many transcripts I can save?

No. It is free and unlimited, with no account or sign-up.

Privacy

Does the extension send my data anywhere?

No. It makes no network requests of its own and has no analytics or install ping: the file is built on the page you are watching. The privacy policy has the details.

Uninstall

How do I remove Transcript Download for YouTube?

Open the puzzle piece menu in Chrome’s toolbar, click the three dots next to Transcript Download for YouTube and choose Remove from Chrome. You can also remove it at chrome://extensions.

The only thing it stores is your Menu language choice, kept in the browser’s storage for www.youtube.com, and removing the extension does not clear it. To remove it as well, set Menu language to Automatic before you uninstall, or clear the site data for YouTube in Chrome’s settings.
